The Power of the Cross

May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. Neither circumcision nor un-circumcision means anything; what counts is a new creation. Galatians 6:14,15 I’ve been meditating on these verses lately. One very important premise can be found here, the cross and it’s effect on us. These verses come just on the heals of Paul’s exhortation to the Galatians to ignore the teachings of the Judaizers concerning a number of ceremonial practices of the Old Testament. These Jewish Christians were trying...

Good Parenting

I hear it time and time again. A child misbehaves, someone informs their parent and the parent makes excuses for the child. The parent doesn’t take the information seriously or worse yet they take offense to hearing the truth. I’ve never liked the saying that Hillary Clinton coined some years ago, “It takes a village to raise a child,” only because of the full extent of the meaning behind it. Today, some of my church family and I served the city of Austin in a very tangible way. Some of us were sent out to various places like Town Lake Trail, a cemetery, and an elementary school to clean and do some outside work. This service day just happened to coincide with Austin’s Clean Sweep day which means there were all sorts of opportunities to show the love of Christ as we worked side-by-side with other Austinites who don’t know Jesus. What a blessing today was for each of us who pitched in to help. My 15 year-old daughter and I along with a friend and her daughters all...

Baby Steps

My sister is healing beautifully from her brain surgery. The doctor told her on her three week checkup that the typical recovery time from such a surgery is 6 months. He said that this length of recovery is second only to open heart surgery. Then he said that her progress was amazing and that her recovery was as far along as most of his patients are at three months post-surgery. I know that God has everything to do with this. He made me and her both a promise that she would be fine and He is faithful. But I can’t help but wonder if there is anything else that may be contributing to this...

You Can Do It

The other day, in conversation with a woman who’s husband is unemployed, she said something that I consider a misconception. She said that her husband can do a lot of things but he can’t sell. She actually said he would make a terrible salesman. At first when she said it, I accepted it as fact. I don’t know her husband very well but I assumed that she did. Then I began to think about her accessment of him and found I couldn’t concur. I believe every one of us can and does attempt to sell what we believe in on a daily basis. Take for example the young professional who...
